By any standard, Ian Paisley has exercised a remarkable and influential ministry in Northern Ireland and around the world. He arrived in Belfast as a student in the Theological Hall of the Reformed Presbyterian Church, and at the age of twenty received a call to be the minister of Ravenhill Evangelical Mission Church. Within three years he was a veteran of a number of the most successful gospel missions the province had witnessed since the heyday of W. P. Nicholson. Then his career took an unexpected turn. One mission, in Crossgar, aroused the opposition of the Presbytery of Down which overruled the unanimous decision of the local church's elders by ordering the closure of their lecture hall against the mission. The result was not only a successful mission but the birth of a new congregation and a new denomination -the Free Presbyterian Church of Ulster.
